HUAWEI
watch face COMPETITION
This Contest was organised by Huawei Device Co. Ltd during the period of December 2019 and January 2020.
DESCRIPTION:
This WatchFace is inspired by Svanen, n.17, a paint by Hilma Af Klint made in 1915. She was a Swedish Visionary artist. The spiritual has always been the main source of her creativity.
The painting represents a segmented circle, bisected and divided into a spectrum of lightly painted colours. The abstract signs are symbolic, depicting symmetrical dualities, or reciprocities: Earthly & Esoteric, Male & Female, Good & Evil.
The colour choice is throughout metaphorical: blue stands for the female spirit, yellow for the male one, pink/red for physical/spiritual love.
It seems that Af Klint, fed up with her uncomprehending contemporaries, wagered on a more spiritually attuned future audience. None of her last works have been shown until twenty years after her death. Something about it resonates with a restlessly searching mood in the present culture, hostile to old ideas and free to be interpreted.
According to what has been said so far, the idea here is to let the users be free to read the symbols as they believe. Every colour can be changed in line with their tastes, occasions and moods. Setting the alarm or a reminder, the background will rotate randomly, inverting semicircles colours. It would be a warning for the user that something is changed and something else is going to happen. The watch hands are pictured by: the big white circle which stands for the hour hand, and the small red one which corresponds to the minute hand.
The entire concept has been thought as a contemporary, simple, and customisable theme as well as suitable for both men and women and for different occasions.
Lastly, it is a wish for a positive attitude looking at future solutions, it might not be understood at first sight (as the paintings by Af Klint), but it involves art, time and technology the perfect trio for a meaningful and precious product.
